Along with other dental treatments, dental implant surgery is likely an integral part of your practice. But if your patients aren’t satisfied with the results of their surgery, it can cause you to lose business and ultimately, hurt your reputation. This is why it’s so important to properly prepare your patients for the surgery and have extensive knowledge of implants in clinical dentistry. There are a few things you can do to increase the chances of a successful dental implant surgery.

Perform a Comprehensive Dental Exam

Thoroughly evaluate your patient’s teeth. Make sure their gums are relatively healthy. This can help reduce certain risks of surgery such as infection. Unhealthy gums are unlikely to heal from surgery, so be sure to thoroughly check them out. Also, get X-rays and 3D images of your patient’s teeth. You can also make models of their teeth and jaw for further evaluation.

Review Medical History

Ask your patients about their medical history and any medications they may take to treat a medical condition. If the patient has certain heart conditions or orthopedic implants, it’s usually wise to prescribe antibiotics before surgery to help prevent possible infection.

Create a Treatment Plan

Write out a treatment plan that’s specifically tailored to your patient. Take into account important factors such as how many teeth they need replaced and the condition of their jawbone and remaining teeth. These factors can play a major role in the success of the dental implant surgery because if their jawbone and remaining teeth aren’t in good condition, you can risk injury or infection. If you determine that a patient isn’t a good candidate for dental implants, be sure to inform them of this.

Installing dental implants can be a tricky job, but if you make the right preparations, you can help ensure a high success rate.
