Pakistan have not summoned three players – Wahab Riaz, Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad – for the final fitness test ahead of the squad announcement for 2019 World Cup.
Pakistan have not called three big names for the final fitness tests to be conducted ahead of the upcoming 2019 ICC World Cup. 23 players were picked on Thursday by the Inzamam ul Haq-led selection committee for a final fitness test with the World Cup selection in focus. Wahab Riaz, Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad were not called as the trio looks unlikely to make the cut into the final 15-man squad.
A two-day fitness Test will be conducted at the National Cricket Academy before the final call is made on the all-important selection of the World Cup squad. The players called for the Tests were picked by the selection committee after consultation with coach Mickey Arthur. Pakistan will begin their World Cup campaign against West Indies on 31st May.
Umar made a comeback into the Pakistan ODI squad last month after a long lay-off due to form and fitness issues. He played all five ODIs against Australia amassing 150 runs. On Tuesday, he scored an unbeaten 136 in the Pakistan National One-day Cup following it up with another brilliant knock of 99 runs on Thursday. His snubbing from the 23-man probables list is a big surprise.
Shehzad, who was in fine form in the Pakistan Super League with scores of 50, 73, 99, 1 and 58 in his last five appearances for his franchise, was also not called-up for the fitness test. Experienced pacer Riaz was also omitted from the list of probables. Pakistan has a formidable pace arsenal with Mohammad Amir spearheading the attack. In Usman Khan Shinwari, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hassan Ali they have three pacers, who can torment batting attacks on their day. Pakistan will announce their World Cup squad on April 18th.
Here is a list of 23 players called for fitness tests by Pakistan:
Sarfaraz Ahmed (Capt), Abid Ali, Asif Ali, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Hassan Ali, Imad Wasim, Imam-ul-Haq, Junaid Khan, Muhammad Abbas, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, Shoaib Malik, Usman Khan Shinwari and Yasir Shah.
